Hiccups are nothing more than involuntary spasms of the thin wall of muscle, called the diaphraghm, that lies between the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity.
We find it humorous to see peoples' response to this event. Beer and bagels and breathing into a paper bag have been some reported solutions.
But in some people, it may be a real problem. It is termed an intractable hiccup if it happens for more than a month.
Some causes of hiccups may even be some prescription medicines. One clinical report listed 15-20 such agents. Some indicate that medciines used for the cure, may actually cause hiccups themselves, such as chlorpromazine and metoclopamide.
Some of the Rx solutions include:
Chlorpromazine
ranitidine
Omeprazole
Tegerasod
metocoplamide
promethazine
ondansetron
Other cures have include:
Surgery
Vagal Nerve Stimulator implants
Injections of Botulinum Toxin
Chiropractic
One older beta blocker medication used in heart failure, and for control of blood pressure, carvedilol, is believed to have ended the ten year hiccups for one 59 year old male.
Another new use for an older medicine!
