Children’s Vision & Eye Health
Children’s vision plays a critical role in learning, development, and confidence. In fact, up to 80% of classroom learning is visual. Yet many vision problems go unnoticed because kids don’t always realize their sight isn’t normal. February is a great time to focus on eye health and the importance of early care.
Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem
Children may not say “I can’t see,” but they often show it in other ways. Watch for squinting, frequent headaches, eye rubbing, sitting too close to screens, tilting their head, or difficulty with reading. These could be signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or eye coordination issues.
Vision Affects Learning
If a child can’t clearly see the board or their book, it can affect attention, confidence, and academic performance. Many kids labeled as “distracted” or “behind” are actually dealing with undiagnosed vision problems. Early exams help catch issues before they interfere with school success.
When Should Kids Have Eye Exams?
Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam around age 1, again at age 3, and before starting school. After that, annual or biannual exams help track development. School vision screenings are helpful but don’t replace a full eye exam by an eye care professional.
Screen Time and Eye Strain
With tablets, computers, and phones everywhere, kids’ eyes are working harder than ever. Encourage the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Make sure screens are at eye level and rooms are well-lit.
Nutrition for Healthy Eyes
Eye health starts with good nutrition. Foods rich in vitamin A, C, E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids support vision. Think carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, eggs, fish, and citrus fruits.
Make Eye Care a Priority
Healthy eyes help kids learn, play, and thrive. Regular checkups, good habits, and early detection give your child the best chance at clear, comfortable vision.
This February, take a moment to focus on the little eyes that depend on you.
