Pharmacist Spotlight: Ivory Bertling

Meet Ivory Bertling, PharmD, one of our pharmacists in the compounding lab at Hawthorne Taylor Pharmacy.

Where did you go to school?

University of South Carolina Honors College in Columbia, SC for 2 years for chemistry, then went to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC for pharmacy school

How long have you been with Hawthorne?

A little over 3 year.

What made you want to go into pharmacy?

I originally wanted to go into pharmacy because I believe that pharmacists are an overly utilized medical profession that patients feel comfortable discussing health issues with, and pharmacists can make an impact in preventative care.

Why did you choose Hawthorne Pharmacy?

I chose Hawthorne Pharmacy because the pharmacy on Taylor St. was the first landmark my family and I saw whenever we went to Forest Acres while coming in from Irmo. I have always thought that working at an independent pharmacy would be special (more physician and patient interaction, having time to be creative, addressing needs for the community, etc.), and I have been lucky to be a part of the Hawthorne family.

What do you think is a benefit to our patients when using Hawthorne vs any other pharmacy?

I work with one of the best staff in my whole entire career as a pharmacist. We all have different personalities and perspectives, but we get along and work together really well.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The community at our downtown location is very diverse, and I love meeting new people from different backgrounds and cultures. It makes me appreciative of the work I do from the people I have the chance to serve.

Do you have an area of expertise (specializations, certifications, training)?

I have an area of expertise in compounding and have completed training in PCCA hormone replacement therapy and dermatology.

Any hobbies? Fun facts?

I love spending time with my family and friends, especially my mini Goldendoodle Ellie. I love to go on walks with Ellie and my husband, spinning, baking (sourdough bread is my specialty!), hiking, and traveling. My husband and I enjoy spotting new items at Costco and Trader Joe's.
